Phyllis Swanson

North San Diego County artist Phyllis Swanson has been producing high quality, thematically varied art in an array of media for over 30 years. She sees her strong understanding of color, her visual perceptiveness, and her desire to surprise as common threads in most of her work.

Currently, she is working both as a commercial artist with her partner Ron Juncal for Studio 2 and as a resident artist in The Foundry at New Village Arts in Carlsbad. Phyllis has just been accepted as the newest resident artist at Michael J. Wolf Fine Art in San Diego. Much of her current personal work is in acrylic paintings and recycled material collage. She is especially excited about her recent Wine foil collage pieces currently on display at Michael J. Wolf Fine Art.

Her commercial work through Studio 2 has been wide reaching but has focused in recent years in both public and private murals and performance art pieces. Studio 2 performance pieces included thirteen years as featured artists for Carlsbad’s Artsplash, two years as featured artist for Chalk La Strada, Little Italy, San Diego, and inclusion in the prestigious l’Madonnari street painting festival in Santa Barbara, CA.

Her publicly viewable murals include: The Sherwood Radiology unit, “A Tribute to Sherwood” mural for Canine Companions for Independence, Southwest regional office, Oceanside, CA, “Barrio Carlsbad” for The City of Carlsbad, “Tribute to 395” for The City of Vista, Rady’s Children’s Hospital murals in the NICU unit San Diego, CA, and Mayur Pavagahdi, “Cecil the Lion” mural, Carlsbad Village Dr, Carlsbad, CA.

Phyllis’ various credits include being a twelve time award winner at the San Diego County Fair, participation in multiple Southern California regional juried award exhibitions including the San Diego Art Institute, the Cannon Art Gallery Juried Exhibition (2003 & 2013), the Cannon Art Gallery Public Artists Private Works 2012 show. Two of her works appeared in the International Society of Interior Designers Design Home in La Jolla, California. Also, she has been included in a three person show at the Kruglak Gallery in Oceanside and a two person show at the Lyceum Theater in San Diego. She is currently an original resident artist in The Foundry at New Village Arts in Carlsbad.

After graduating in 1978 from San Diego State University with a degree in biology, Phyllis pursued a long time interest in art by studying oil painting from local artist, Frances James. She broadened her skills studying scientific illustration and Chinese brush painting at UCSD in La Jolla, and benefited from three years of watercolor study from the nationally recognized artist, Lola Juris.

Phyllis Swanson is a lifelong resident of San Diego County and currently resides in Oceanside with her dog and husband (or her husband and dog.)
